WHAT IS HERNIATED INTERVERTEBRAL DISC
The vertebrae that make up your spine are separated from each other by flexible discs called intervertebral discs. Discs absorb shocks that affect the spine and at the same time give it flexibility. Healthy discs are shown in the image with blue pads, a herniated disc is shown with a red pad.
However, the intervertebral disc can be damaged, for example due to injury or excessive strain. In such a situation, the disk may be pushed out of the space in which it is supposed to be seated or even ruptured and the internal contents of the disk are then pushed away from its core. We call this disease a herniated disc.
This spinal condition can cause mechanical pressure on the surrounding nerves and lead to pain and inflammation. Left untreated, a herniated disc can lead to paralysis and a significant change in quality of life.
SYMPTOMS OF A HERNIATED DISC
When a herniated disc presses on a nerve or surrounding parts of the spine, we distinguish different symptoms depending on the part of the spine where the herniated disc occurred. If it is a herniated disc in the lumbar spine, then we encounter the following symptoms:
Pain shooting into coccyx legs and feet. Back pain may or may not be present - this i sciatica
Numbness or tingling in the legs or feet
Muscle weakness
If it is a herniated disc in the cervical spine, the pacient experiences the following symptoms:
Pain in the shoulder blades
Bolest, která vystřeluje do ramen, paží a někdy do rukou a prstů
Pain that shoots into shoulders, arms, and sometimes into the hands and fingers
Neck muscle spasms
The symptoms of a herniated disc in the middle part of the back are different. There may be pain in the upper back, lower back, abdomen or legs. Also weakness or numbness in one or both legs.
HOW IS A HERVITE DISC DIAGNOSED?
Your doctor can estimate a herniated disc by asking you a few basic questions. Because we care about the quality of our services, we have to be sure what kind of spine disease it really is. For this purpose, it is necessary for the patient to undergo a diagnosis using magnetic resonance imaging before starting treatment.
